This privacy policy explains how Where Next handles information when you:

use the Where Next mobile application;

2. Summary

The current version of Where Next does not require a user account and does not provide cloud synchronisation.

Saved places, plans, lists, family details, accessibility preferences and vehicle preferences are stored locally on the user’s device.

Where Next may use a device’s location to provide nearby places, travel services, weather, routes and distances. Location is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking and is not linked by Where Next to a user account.

We do not sell personal information.

3. Information handled by the app

Information stored locally on your device

The app may store the following information locally:

saved places, events and source URLs;
lists and journey plans;
favourites and visited status;
notes and personal ratings;
family-member nicknames and dates of birth;
numbers of adults and carers;
accessibility or Blue Badge preferences;
vehicle, fuel and electric-vehicle preferences;
app settings and temporary service caches.

This information is stored using the device’s local application storage. It is not uploaded to a Where Next user profile because the current version does not offer accounts or cloud synchronisation.

Some details, such as a destination’s coordinates, name or URL, may be included in an external request when you use a feature that requires online information.

Location information

If you give the app permission, it may access your precise or approximate location.

Location may be used to:

show places and travel services near you;
calculate distances and routes;
locate parking, fuel stations, EV charging points, toilets and other facilities;
display weather relevant to your location or destination;
open directions in a mapping application.

Where required to provide these features, coordinates may be sent to Where Next or an appropriate service provider.

Where Next does not use location for advertising, behavioural profiling or cross-app tracking. We do not intentionally link location searches to a named user or account.

You can refuse or withdraw location permission through your device settings. Some nearby-search features may then be unavailable, but you can still use other parts of the app.

Place searches and imported URLs

When you search for a place, add a destination, paste a URL or request a refresh from its original source, the following may be transmitted to an appropriate provider:

search terms;
place names and addresses;
destination coordinates;
place identifiers;
website URLs;
other information required to return place details.

Where Next uses this information only to provide the requested feature.

Travel-service requests

When you request nearby parking, fuel stations, EV charging, toilets or similar services, the app sends the requested coordinates, radius and relevant filters to the Where Next API.

The Where Next API may obtain or combine information from public or licensed data sources. These currently include Google Places, OpenStreetMap, Overpass, Nominatim, Open Charge Map and the UK Fuel Finder service.

These requests are not associated by Where Next with a user account.

Technical and server information

Our website, API and hosting provider may automatically process technical information such as:

IP address;
browser or device type;
requested page or API endpoint;
request date and time;
response status;
diagnostic or security information.

This information is used to operate, secure and troubleshoot the service, prevent abuse and maintain availability.

We do not use this technical information to build advertising profiles.

4. Third-party services

Where Next uses external services to provide certain features. Depending on the feature used, information such as a search term, destination, URL, IP address or coordinates may be processed by:

Google Maps Platform and Google Places – place search, place details, photographs and routes;
Apple Maps – maps and directions on Apple devices;
WeatherAPI.com – current weather and forecasts;
what3words – three-word location references;
Microlink – extracting public information from a URL supplied by the user;
OpenStreetMap, Overpass and Nominatim – map and nearby-service information;
Open Charge Map – EV charging information;
UK Fuel Finder – fuel-station and fuel-price information;
Brandfetch – displaying brand assets where configured;
WordPress and our hosting providers – website and API hosting;
mapping or navigation applications selected by the user – directions and navigation.

These providers operate under their own terms and privacy policies. Some services may process information outside the United Kingdom.

We select providers needed to operate the app, but their separate processing is governed by their own privacy notices.

5. Affiliate links

Where Next may display links to ticketing, parking, accommodation or other travel providers.

Some links are affiliate links. If you follow one of these links and make a purchase, Where Next may receive a commission at no additional cost to you.

Opening an affiliate link may provide the affiliate network or merchant with:

the affiliate identifier contained in the link;
your IP address and browser information;
the page or service from which the link was opened;
information about a subsequent purchase or conversion.

Where Next may receive aggregated referral or commission reports. We do not receive your payment-card details.

Affiliate networks and merchants process information under their own privacy policies.

Contact forms and correspondence

If you contact us, we may process your name, email address, message and any information you choose to provide.

We use this information to answer enquiries, provide support and manage feedback.

Comments

If comments are enabled and you leave a comment, the website may collect the information entered in the comment form together with your IP address and browser user-agent information for moderation and spam prevention.

Comments may be checked using an automated spam-detection service.

Cookies

The website may use cookies that are necessary for:

website operation and security;
remembering basic preferences;
WordPress administration and login functions;

The mobile app does not use website cookies for advertising or cross-app tracking.

approved website comments may remain until they or the associated page are deleted;

No internet or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should protect access to their devices because saved plans and family settings are held locally.

delete individual saved places, plans and lists in the app;
remove locally stored app data by deleting the app or clearing its storage;
